I thought it was so sweet when Akela’s mom contacted me to book a session to celebrate her dog turning 1 year-old.

Right from the start, I could see that her mom loved her very much and there was a big connection between these two.

Growing up, Akela’s mom had always wanted a dog in her life but was never allowed to have one and wasn’t in a good mental space nor living condition to own one. When she found Akela on the Internet, she knew she had to go see her.

Akela’s former owner had to give her up as she was leaving an abusive relationship and it was no longer an option to keep a dog with her. Akela’s mom, who was in the same situation a few years back, met with the previous owner and ended up staying with her for 3 hours talking to her.

They both spoke about their struggles, present and past, and cried. The previous owner knew that Akela would be happier in her now-mom’s care.

It was hard at first.

For Akela’s mom, this was the first time owning a dog – or any breathing, living species for that matter – and she had absolutely no idea what to do.

Luckily, her best friend and neighbor helped her with a lot of things. Soon, Akela got a new vet, got into puppy classes and started enjoying every moment with her new mom.

Funnily enough, the same week that Akela came into her life, her mom met her partner and knew right away that it was a match for the whole family!

“I know it’s been said a million times before, but I really don’t know what my life was like without her. She’s taught me patience, how to enjoy every moment, got me outside to see the world and unconditional love. I’m so happy to be celebrating her birthday and I can’t wait to celebrate all the small moments in between.”

Akela’s 10% session fee was donated to Homes for Paws Dog Rescue in Ottawa. Thank you for helping us help our rescues!
